Margao Municipal Chairpersons and Chief Officers come and go but open waste burning at the Margao Municipal garden continues unabated right under the nose of the Municipal authorities.
It’s an open secret that garden waste collected by the workers in the northern portion of the Municipal garden, opposite the Margao post office, is being disposed of by burning.
If the garden waste was set afire around the afternoon in the past, the waste is now being burnt by the workers late at night.
Last week, one found travellers along the Margao post office road to find out the huge flames emanating from the Margao Municipal garden, before realisation dawned that the garden waste has been set on fire.
Incidentally, the Margao Municipal Council had in the past taken the plea that the northern portion of the Municipal garden is being maintained by the Forest Department, little realising that the ownership of the Municipal garden lies with the civic body and that the Municipality enjoys the powers to crack the whip against open waste burning.
Surprisingly, waste burning at the Margao Municipal garden continues unabated, with the Margao Municipal authorities having no answer to the disposal of waste by burning when the waste ought to be disposed of in an eco-friendly manner.
