Acting on the complain of an alert MMC ward Councillor, Vasco police on Thursday arrested a contractor of a mobile network company and his staff for cutting a road at Shantinagar without obtaining the requisite permissions.
The contractor and his staff were later released on bail.
According to a circular and directions issued by the Collector, no road cutting will be permitted on or after May 15 in view of the arrival of the monsoon season.
However, a contractor associated with a mobile network company was found involved in road-cutting activity at Shantinagar on Thursday morning.
While the road cutting was going on, people reported the matter to Ward Councillor Yatin Kamurlekar, who immediately arrived at the spot. He then sought to see valid permission granted to the contractor for the road cutting in his ward but the contractor could not produce any documents and claimed the permissions were in his office.
Kamurlekar told the contractor to stop the work and also informed Vasco police to detain the errant contractor and his staff and also attach the machinery involve in the road cutting.
Vasco police later arrested the contractor, his junior engineer and machine operator. Kamurlekar has demanded that authorities take strict action against the contractor and the principal mobile network company.
“The contractor had already began cutting the road and a considerable length of the road had been cut without any permission and despite the Collector’s order to refrain from such activities during the monsoon. He has ruined a new hot-mixed road in the area. This is wrong as this is posing a lot of danger to the people, especially two-wheeler riders who commute via this road especially to drop their kids off to school,” said Kamurlekar.
Meanwhile Vasco PI Nalasco Raposo said that an offence was registered at Vasco police station against the contractor and his staff under section 188 IPC as per notification of the Collector.
“We have arrested the Junior engineer and machine operator under section 3 of PDPP and section 188 of IPC and we also attached the machinery involved. They were later released on bail,” said Raposo.
