In a first, ‘Food Safety on Wheels', a mobile food testing van fully equipped with analytical instruments was launched by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar along with Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Sunday.The mobile food testing van is part of the central sector scheme for strengthening the food testing system. Goa has been the first state to get this facility.
These facilities shall be used to conduct tests for common adulterants in milk, water, edible oils and other items of food of daily consumption. It would also be possible to draw on-the-spot samples and generate reports of the analysis within 15 minutes.
The van is fully equipped with analytical instruments like milk analyser, hot air oven, hot plate, mixer-grinder, digital weighing scale, digital multi-parameter hand-held meter, digital refractometer, among others.
This fully equipped van costing approximately Rs 41 lakh has been sponsored by the central government and is manned by a specially trained driver, a chemist and an attendant.
The van would also be used for creating awareness about food safety, hygiene and promoting healthy eating habits among people. Additionally, it would also be used for conducting training and certification programmes for food handlers, supervisors in the food businesses, etc.
