Mobile tower emmissionsa mere fraction: says DoT

A joint inspection carried out by the officials of Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and various panchayats in Goa has found that the electromagnetic frequency (EMF) emissions from mobile towers in South Goa are just a fraction of the prescribed limits showing that all the concerns about radiation levels don’t have much basis.
A DoT press note said, “The average radiation at 11 villages inspected in South Goa was 2 percent of the limits set by the DoT, which is well within the prescribed limits. The average value of the EMF level at across these 11 locations was 8.26 milliwatts per square metre (mw/sqm). These findings are well below the prescribed norms set by the DoT at 450 mw/sqm.”
Teams led by officials from DoT (ministry of communications) visited gram panchayats at Betalbatim, Cavelossim, Navelim, Velim, Majorda, Nagoa, Chicalim, Bogmalo, Velsao and Verna.
Interestingly, radiation level in Navelim, Velim, Majorda, Nagoa, Bogmalo, Velsao and Verna was just 1 percent of the prescribed limit.
MM Gupta, sr DDG TERM, said, “These tests lend credence to our findings earlier this month, when DoT officials had undertaken awareness campaigns in 18 panchayats in the State. The findings prove that such fears of health hazard are not backed by facts.”
He continued, “For a State like Goa, which is not only one of the most prominent tourist spots of the country, but is also hosting the BRICS summit, seamless high speed mobile connectivity is an essential requirement.”
DoT also informed that extensive tests have found that there is a need of at least 102 tower sites in the State, particularly in South Goa to achieve the objective of high grade seamless mobile connectivity.
