If the widespread rainfall in the last ten days has wiped off the deficit in the State then much of the credit goes to South Goa which has received more rain than North Goa.
With 1374.7 mm of rainfall as compared to the normal of 1136 mm, South Goa received a surplus of 21 per cent for the period of June 1 to July 7.
Conversely, North Goa was in a deficit by 2.4 percent receiving 1154.9 mm as compared to 1183.8 mm normal rainfall for the same period.
In fact, several rain gauge stations in the South like Canacona, Margao, Sanguem and Quepem reported higher rainfall.
Interestingly, Valpoi which is considered to be the Cheerapunji of Goa in the North has received much less rainfall so far this season.
“Rainfall is highly discreet. The clouds do not stay in the same place and there are different types of clouds bringing different amount of rain. It’s true that Valpoi has received less rainfall but that trend is changing. We have seen good rainfall in Valpoi today,” said former scientist with the IMD Dr Ramesh Kumar.
Meanwhile, the State received an average rainfall of 79.6 mm on Friday reflecting a surplus of 9.8 per cent so far.
In the last 24 hours the highest amount of rainfall was reported from Canacona (126.8 mm) and the lowest at Mormugao (47.6 mm).
The following was the rainfall reported from other centres: Mapusa (76.2 mm), Pernem (90.8), Ponda (73.4), Panaji (79.7), Old Goa (69.7), Sanquelim (64.4), Valpoi (69), Dabolim (79.2), Margao (81.3), Quepem (80.8) and Sanguem (82.1 mm).
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate to heavy rainfall at most places during the next four days (July 8 to 11)
It has also issued a warning of heavy rainfall at a few places on July 8 and at isolated places from July 9 to 10.
The Met department has also said that squally weather with wind speed 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely along and off South Maharashtra - Goa coast on from July 2 to 5.
Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off Goa coast for next four days.
