More AI cameras planned to crack down on speeding

MARGAO

Motorists may soon have to be more cautious about speeding, with the government giving the go-ahead for installing additional AI-enabled cameras on selected road stretches to detect speed violations.

The move was disclosed at a meeting of the South Goa Road Safety Committee, where representatives of the company operating the existing AI camera network briefed the panel on its functioning.

The representatives said motorists tend to slow down at traffic junctions and locations where AI cameras are already operational. However, when consumer rights activist Lorna Fernandes asked how speeding beyond signal junctions would be addressed, they said the government had given the green light for additional AI cameras to detect speed violations.

Fernandes said the company informed the committee that between 500 and 700 Motor Vehicles Act violations are detected daily by the AI cameras.

The panel also discussed heavy-duty trucks being parked along highways in violation of recent Supreme Court directions. Fernandes raised roadside truck parking along NH66 between Navelim and Cuncolim, citing the absence of a dedicated truck terminus.
