The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has resolved yet another long-pending issue faced out of a litigation with HPCL company, after the council not only got a revenue of Rs 15 crore, but also got back prime area of around 9,000 square metres.
Expressing happiness over the revenue earned by the council, MMC Chairperson Girish Borker during a council meeting on Wednesday said around Rs 8 crore will be utilised to settle the retirement funds. which has been pending for about two-decades.
“This could easily be one of the biggest revenues earned in recent years. However, we need to realise that we had so many staff who have put in so many years of service and have retired but did not get any retirement funds for the last 20 years,” said Borker.
“Some retired staff have even expired without the benefits and I feel that this amount that we received should be used to settle them first. We will use around Rs 8 crore for this fund that will be used to settle these retired staff.”
“There were over 32 employees who did not get any funds and we had an amount in crores due to them.”
The MMC chairperson said the remaining funds will be used for development works.
“The prime area that we have got back will be used for another revenue generation project. We were struggling with staff but we did not have the money to get more staff and pay them salaries. We once had 400 labourers but presently we have only 72 labourers and we are doing our best with such shortage of workers, especially on the garbage issue,” Borker added.
Rates fixed for pay-parking facilities in Vasco

“Pay parking will be implemented for four-wheelers at around four locations. We have decided on Rs 20 per hour with an increase of Rs 15 every hour. The pay-parking will be implemented on the lane opposite Vishwasurya till Rajani store, lane outside the Vasco post office, etc. We have finalised the rates today and we will now start with the marking of the area and the facility will be started by July end or first week of August,” said Borker.
MMC to seal fish market if Sopo not paid
VASCO: MMC Chairperson Girish Borker on Wednesday warned that the Vasco fish market could be sealed if Sopo was not paid by the fish vendors. “We have realised that fish vendors have not paid their Sopo for the last two months, causing us losses of around Rs 2 lakh,” he said.
