The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), currently a 25-ward civic body, will soon have two more wards added to its jurisdiction, taking the total number of wards to 27.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar made this announcement on Tuesday, stating that the move aims to ensure better service to residents and equitable representation.
Salkar was speaking to reporters after launching a Rs 15 lakh drainage improvement project at Mestawada Bhutebhat under the MLA Local Area Development (LAD) fund. MMC Chairperson Girish Borker and local residents were also present at the site.
“This ward has around 4,000 voters, while others have 2,000 or 3,000. There is no balance in the voter strength across wards, which sometimes overburdens a councillor and affects public service delivery. Adding two new wards will help us serve the people more effectively,” said Salkar.
He further thanked Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for allocating Rs 2.5 crore under the MLA LAD funds.
“These funds allow us to take up works in areas that often remain neglected. Apart from Mestawada, similar drainage works costing Rs 15 lakh will be carried out in Kharewado,” he added.
Salkar also mentioned that several other development projects are underway in Vasco, including the long-awaited sports complex, which has already been tendered and will begin soon.
“Road works are approved but are currently on hold due to ongoing sewage pipeline laying, which is happening for the first time in 40 years. Once that’s done, we will begin road work as well,” he said.
