Deciding to act on dilapidated buildings in the port town, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has identified 32 dilapidated building and Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has also sent notices to the parties concerned.
The MMC carried out an inspection and found out that four buildings are on the verge of collapse and directed the residents to vacate the premises. Fernandes informed reporters on Wednesday that a notice to vacate the premises had been sent to residents of the four buildings.
“However, residents continued to live there and hence, the case has been sent to the District Magistrate South to take a decision in the matter under the disaster management,” said Fernandes.
Fernandes further informed that owners of two buildings were directed to produce the stability certificate of the structures to the council, while MMC had also identified five dilapidated buildings belonging to MMC itself.
“Of the 32 dilapidated building identified, a case pertaining to 4 buildings likely to collapse has been sent to the district magistrate.”
“Two buildings near the police station have been directed to either be demolished or give us a stability certificate from a registered structural engineers.”
“As far as five dilapidated buildings belonging to the MMC, we have requested the Goa Engineering College to conduct a site inspection and give us a report. On the basis of those reports, we will carry out demolition of the buildings. The exercise is going on and it is not a one-day job. We have already issued notices and we are on the job,” the chief officer said.
