Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Santosh Kundaikar on Thursday said the municipal body was facing a major financial crunch and had to pay a lot of bills to various vendors.
Speaking to reporters after a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan meeting on the garbage collection at Ravindra Bhavan, Kundaikar said: "MMC is facing a major financial crunch. Even to repair vehicles, we need the money and there are so many previous bills that are pending.”
“Even if I try to do something, the vendors ask us to clear their previous bills before they take up the new works.”
“Electricity bills are not paid by the MMC since 2019 and I will now sit with the administrator and get the issue resolved. The process of re-assessment of house tax began before I took over as chief officer and it will be completed by the month-end. Once this work is completed, we will go in for recoveries of house tax," said Kundaikar.
The MMC chief officer said there had been some points raised by Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida on garbage collection during the joint meeting.
“I will take it up with the MMC staff and supervisors and get the issue resolved. I have already taken up a new work schedule for the MMC staff and it will be implemented from Monday," said Kundaikar.
