Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Councillor Krishna (Daji) Salkar on Tuesday accused the municipal council of failing miserably to act on basic issues concerning the port town.

Salkar was addressing a news conference in his office along with fellow councillor Rochana Borkar and social workers.

“I have not been provided labourers to clean up garbage and drains in the city, compelling me to use my own personal funds. The MMC administration has not even been bothered to water the trees to beautify the Swatantra Path under CSR activities and the trees are on the verge of withering away.”

Salkar also appealed the MMC to take up pre-monsoon works, recalling that the city had been flooded in many places last year as gutters were not cleaned and pre-monsoon works were not taken up.

“As a part of pre-monsoon works, authorities need to prune the huge trees on the verge of collapse near Vidhyadhiraj Mutt, Vasco fish market and St Joseph’s school. I had written to the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) and the DMA had issued instructions to get the trees pruned, no action had been taken. MMC administration should not take such things lightly,” said Salkar.

Salkar also said many old and abandoned buildings needed to be demolished immediately, adding that he had also written to the DMA seeking action on priority basis.

Salkar also said the MMC must procure fogging machines and grass cutting machines on priority, to ensure a proper fumigation schedule in all wards and to avoid vector-borne diseases.

“I have even requested Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida to take up tarring of internal roads, while the high mast in the city has not been working for a long period, causing inconvenience to people,” he added.

Councillor Rochana Borkar said the nullah from Bhutebhat to Mestawada needed to be cleaned regularly as the nullah water had entered the fields and had damaged vegetables being grown there.
