Water supply to consumers of St Cruz, St Andre and Taleigao constituencies, including defence establishments and Goa Medical College, will be restricted on March 6 and 7 due to a major interconnection of the 400 mm conveying main pipeline at Merces.

A PWD official informed that the work of interconnecting the new pipeline to the old pipeline will be taken up on March 6 with the major jointing works happening at two places, one near the Santa Cruz-Merces junction and the other near Santa Barbara chapel.

“The new water pipeline has already been laid and only the jointing work has to be done,” the official stated, while adding that the completion of the work depends on the time taken for water to drain.

“The welding work can be taken up only after the water drains from the pipeline,” the official informed.

Water disruptions

After the interconnection work is completed, it will bring major relief to the

consumers who get water supply from this pipeline, which had ruptured on numerous occasions due to the ongoing work of highway

expansion.

With the pipeline located below the ground where the highway expansion work is undertaken, the water supply was disrupted on numerous occasions due to the ruptures, especially in August last year, depriving households of water supply for several days.

Later, locals had demanded the shifting of the water pipeline before going ahead with the work on the highway

expansion.
