The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) led by Chairperson Leo Rodrigues on Monday seized goods and even makeshift handcarts during the drive, as part of an anti-encroachment drive in parts of Mangor and near Varunapuri in Vasco.

Speaking to reporters, MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said the council had warned those operating makeshift handcarts several times because they are illegal and, on the highway, which leads to congestion and accidents.

“We even sent them notices, but they did not seem to pay heed and finally we received a letter from Vasco Traffic Cell to take immediate action. Handcarts and stalls are not allowed on the highways and we also have a court notice,” said Rodrigues.

“We carried out a similar drive last time and we confiscated their goods but they have come back again. This time, we have confiscated their makeshift carts as well. We will now continue this drive and from now on, we will not only seize goods but also confiscate their carts.”

MMC Councillor Narayan Borker said despite several drives, the carts would come back and suspected some godfather had been backing the illegal handcarts and stalls.

"The MMC staff and inspectors come but these people ignore them and this daring attitude can come only with a godfather. The MMC is striving to keep the area clean and streamline environment and this drive is just to ensure that these people learn their lesson a hard way.”

“We are also trying to find out the force backing these illegal carts and we will also find out the people who may be hand in glove with them,” said Borkar.
