Following a protest by the local Vasco fish market vendors on Monday, the Mormugao Municipal Council ( MMC ) on Tuesday sent a team of inspectors to close down wholesale fish outlets that were operating from Kharewado.
MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues later speaking to media said that the MMC will not tolerate illegalities and also condemned the statement of fish market vendors' leaders accusing the MMC of obtaining monetary benefits from wholesalers.
"MMC is here to serve the people and we are doing our best to ensure that people are benefited. We had recieved a complaint from the Vasco fish market vendors that they had suffered from lack of business due to some outlets selling fish in wholesale illegally," Rodrigues said.
"We have immediately sent our team and closed down the fish wholesale outlets operating at Kharewado and we want to pass a strong message that we will not tolerate any illegality in our jurisdiction," added Rodrigues.
"MMC has already initiated drives against encroachment and roadside vendors as well and the Chief Officer has sent a team to ensure the closure of wholesale fish outlets and to take strict action against roadside vendors," he said.
"We also condemn the statement and baseless accusations made by one of the fishermen leaders Custodio D'Souza that MMC staff get monetary benefits from wholesalers which is wrong. Our staff, ranging from workers to Municipal inspectors, are doing a great job and we are here to serve the people and there will be no toleration of illegalities or encroachment," said Rodrigues.
