The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday resolved to stage the centenary celebration mela at the landfilled site opposite Tanya Hotel.

After a special council meeting, MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar informed reporters that 5-7 day festival was being planned, where in Mahila Mandals would be given an opportunity to showcase their products.

“The mela would have an exhibition, live food counters and entertainment programs, besides many other events. I also appeal to Vascokars to come forth with their proposals as to how we can improve this mela as we are short of time. If people come up with proposals and Co operate the mela will be a success,” said Gaonkar.

Gaonkar further said the new fish market project was given to GSUDA who had tendered the project and awarded the contract, while the MMC had received a letter to get the site cleared.

“We have identified two sites where fish vendors can be shifted while the market is being constructed. We will have a meeting with fish vendors to inform the sites identified and later decide where they can be shifted while the market is being built.”

“This will be discussed with fish vendors and only after they agree, will we shift them and hand over the market to GSUDA,” said Gaonkar.

He informed that the government has given them directions that they can collect up to 33% revenue from all government offices in the form of fees or rent or construction fees.

“We will also collect garbage from various institutions because we have an airport in the vicinity and garbage is also become a major issue. We will collect garbage from INS Hansa, Nofra 1 and 2 and MPT,” added Gaonkar.

The council meeting also discussed repairs of a public toilet at Ward 14, construction of community hall through GSUDA by demolishing unused toilets near Govt high school in Ward 4, beautification of dark spots in all 25 wards, NOC to Mormugao Hindu Samaj for construction of eco-friendly crematorium with recreation at Maimolem and appointment of a chartered accountant for MMC.
