Councillors of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) are all set to get identity, business cards and monthly mobile phone bill allowance.
MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik on Friday directed his PA to find the cost of a plastic identity and business card so that order could be placed and provide all his councillors with identity and business cards.
“Councillors might not display their identity cards when they visit MMC, but it will help them to prove their identity whenever they visit other offices. They are the elected representatives and they should get some privileges like monthly mobile allowance, business and identity cards,” said Naik.
Naik further said the identity cards will carry photograph, name, ward number and the term of the respective councillors.
When asked for the reason behind providing the councillors with monthly mobile allowance when they are paid honorarium, Naik said: “What is paid to the councillors is a petty amount which is not sufficient to take care of their mobile bills.”
“The new councillors are very serious in discharging their duty and have been working towards development and cleanliness of their respective wards from day one,” he said.
“When they show so much interest in getting the work of their wards done, I feel a small amount sanctioned to pay their mobile bills will give them added boost to carry out their duty towards their wards instead of involving in petty corruption,” added Naik.
Naik said having identity card is need of the hour, as one has to display his/her identity card at the time of emergency.
“Business card helps the councillors when they give it to any officer or other person for further correspondence. Councillor can be called any time as their mobile number is mentioned on it,” said Naik.
“Little things make us happy, in the same way I want to provide my councillors with identity, business cards and monthly mobile allowance so they can also feel happy and work earnestly,” added Naik.
