Agitated motorcycle pilots have opposed the government’s proposal to introduce a motorcycle pilot app, claiming it would threaten their livelihoods and undermine Goa’s traditional two-wheeler taxi service.
A delegation met Goa Forward chief Vijai Sardesai, expressing fears that the app would pave the way for outsiders to operate from motorcycle pilot stands and erode a profession that has existed since the Portuguese era.
“Most pilots are not well versed with smartphones and cannot operate mobile apps. How will they earn a livelihood under such a system?” they asked, adding that they already struggle to secure return trips after dropping passengers.
The pilots said the app-based system would “destroy our identity and livelihoods”.
Backing their concerns, Sardesai described motorcycle pilots as an integral part of Goemkarpon and Goa’s identity. He said motorcycle taxi services are unique to Goa and deserve government protection. “Outsiders should not be granted licences to operate motorcycle taxis. Former Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had protected the interests of local pilots,” he said.
Describing motorcycle pilots as a traditional occupation, Sardesai sought PWD Minister Digambar Kamat’s stand on the proposal, noting that he had earlier championed the cause of motorcycle pilots, khajekars and toddy tappers.
Urging Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to keep the proposal on hold, Sardesai said the interests of motorcycle pilots and other traditional occupations must be protected.
