CANACONA
Canacona Police have arrested the motorcycle rider Rohit Patil (34) of Hotegal-Karnataka on connection with the rash and negligent riding which claimed the life of 30-year-old Divya Naik of Ankola-Karnataka on the NH66 highway at Maxem-Loliem on Sunday.
Canacona Police Inspector Harish Raut Dessai said Patil had been arrested under Section 279 and 304 (a) on Sunday itself.
The accused was also subjected to an alcohol test as other investigations were being conducted in the mishap.
PI Raut Dessai said the body of Divya Naik was handed over to family members for final rites after the autopsy was performed on Monday.
It is reportedly learnt that the motorcycle, which Rohit Patil was riding on the fateful day, belongs to his friend. Patil and Naik were proceeding to Hotegal-Karnataka when the mishap took place at Maxem (Loliem).
Patil had worn a helmet and had sustained only minor bruises in the mishap. He was discharged after first aid at the Canacona Community Health Centre and was later arrested by Canacona Police.
FISH-SPILLAGE IN DOUBT
In an unusual twist to the widespread claim that the motorcycle had skidded due to fish-water spillage on the road, police have now voiced doubts whether there was fish-water spillage on the road in the first place
“The place where the motorcycle skidded is a one-way road section of NH66 (towards Karwar) ascending the slope at Dapot-Maxem. Normally, fish-laden containers and other vehicles use the other one-way road to descend the slope and proceed towards Canacona and Margao,” said PI Raut Dessai.
“During our enquiry, we found no traces of fish-water spillage on the road,” said PI Raut Dessai.
