With the newly imposed steep fines coming into effect from Friday, the Traffic Police in Canacona penalised 38 motorists for difference violations and collected Rs 20,500 in fines.
“Being the first day with the enhanced rates of fines, emphasis was not given on penalties but on public awareness to follow traffic rules and not to fall prey for penalties,” said Canacona Traffic Police Cell PI Vinayak Patil.
A total of 19 cases were booked for tinted glasses (Rs 9,500), while Rs 3,500 was collected towards Section 177 (General provision-Wilful disobedience) from seven motorists.
Three cases were booked against two-wheelers for not wearing helmets and one each for violating no-entry, carrying persons in goods carriage, improper number plate, unauthorised parking alongside another parked vehicle, emission of smoke, without rear view mirror, protruding of load, lane cutting and improper headlights.
Two traffic teams were placed on the NH66 highway at Gulem and Polem sections, while Canacona Traffic Cell PI Vinayak Patil himself led a mobile team regulating and challaning motorists for traffic violations along the main roads of Canacona.
After the new steep fines for traffic violations came into effect from Thursday midnight, the Canacona Traffic Police Cell formed two teams which were stationed early Friday morning, while PI Patil was seen taking rounds along internal roads of Canacona.
According to PI Vinayak Patil, the crackdown on traffic violations will continue, and motorists found violating traffic rules will be penalised as per the new traffic fines. He has appealed to motorists to strictly follow traffic guidelines to avoid penalties.
