After facing a little hiccup due to the delay in supplying of raw materials, the construction of the four-lane Tar Bridge in Mapusa is expected to be completed by end of April, much ahead of the deadline, and thrown open for traffic by early May.
The work on the 40-metre long bridge costing around Rs 10.30 crore started in November last year and carried an eight-month deadline for its completion.
Mapusa MLA and Vice Chairman of GSIDC Joshua D’Souza informed that the entire work has been executed on priority.
“The work on the project undertaken by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) has been ahead of schedule with no compromise in quality. Once completed, the bridge will act as a crucial link to key villages of Aldona, Bastora and Moira,” D’Souza said.
The Mapusa MLA was speaking during an inspection of the ongoing work of the four-lane Tar Bridge along with GSIDC General Manager Jude Carvalho, deputy manager Sonia Madkaikar and BJP Mapusa General Secretary Yogesh Khedekar.
According to the General Manager of GSIDC Jude Carvalho, there was a little delay due to supply of some raw materials.
“Now, that issue has been resolved and the contractor has agreed to compensate for the lost time. The contractor has promised to complete the entire casting work by April 20. Then we will need some time for testing after which the bridge will be commissioned,” Carvalho said.
Two months ago, the general manager had informed The Goan that the work on the bridge would be completed by March end and it would be commissioned and thrown open for traffic in the first week of April.
The four-lane composite bridge across Mapusa River will have one-metre footpaths on either side.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had laid the foundation stone for construction of the bridge in November end last year and work on the bridge began soon thereafter.
The old single lane Tar Bridge was later demolished to make way for the new four-lane bridge.
