MARGAO
The mound of mixed and unsegregated waste dumped along the ring road at Aquem was again set afire on Thursday.
Smoke was billowing from the site as the waste was set afire by unknown persons on Thursday. Margao municipal officials feigned ignorance about the fire, pointing out that it could be the handiwork of miscreants.
Locals, however, pointed out that the Margao municipality has failed to find a solution to the issue of dumping waste along the ring road.
In fact, the civic body has been struggling to find a solution to the dark spot at the ring road with the regular lifting of the waste from the spot providing no solution to put an end to the eyesore.
Incidentally, the burning of waste at the dark spot has become a routine phenomenon, posing a health hazard to the citizens.
A civic official informed that waste dumped at the dark spot comes from the nearby villages and comprises all kinds of unsegregated waste, including meat waste.
“Our door to door workers collect waste from the households in the city. There cannot be any occasion for the citizens of Margao to dump the waste at the dark spot when the waste is being collected from their doorsteps”, the official remarked, saying that dumping of waste at the dark spot is the handiwork of miscreants, including small businesses from the neighbouring villages.
