Speaking to reporters in Panaji on Saturday, RGP supremo Manoj Parab said 294 government primary schools are sought to be merged which actually means that the schools are getting shut down.
“By merging government primary schools, they are actually shutting down schools. It will lead to deprivation of education to the lower income students whose parents cannot afford to send them to schools located away from their own village,” Parab stated and alleged that the government is compelling poor students to enrol in private schools.
He further said that in 2012, there were 900 government primary schools which came down to 720.
“In the same period, aided schools went up from 340 to 420. If government schools are shutting down, how come aided schools increase in number?” he questioned.
“Further, the government figures show that it is spending Rs 1,985 crore on education annually. Of these, a major chunk of Rs 1,343 crore is given to private schools. Further, even as the government secondary schools have a budget of Rs 112 crore, the non-government secondary schools are given Rs 1,035 crore which is almost ten times more,” Parab pointed out while stating that it proves that this government is trying to hand over the education sector to the private or corporate sector.
