Moves to scout for new leader in ‘pause’ mode

Hectic moves in the ruling coalition to find a replacement for ailing Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar seems to have been pushed to the back-burner at least for the moment, even as Parrikar telephonically spoke to the leader of the key coalition partner, and TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai on Thursday.

After the Chief Minister spoke to him over the phone from the AIIMS in connection with some official work, the Goa Forward Supremo said there’s really no need to scout for any leader as a replacement for the Chief Minister for the moment. “The Chief Minister called me up on Thursday evening in connection with some official work. He even advised me how to go about the work. From the way the Chief Minister spoke to me, I can say there will be no need for any replacement of Parrikar as Chief Minister”, Sardesai told The Goan.

While there’s been talk of the coalition government putting in place a Cabinet committee to look after the day-to-day administration, the G-6 led by the TCP Minister had vehemently opposed any temporary solution, while rooting for a permanent system in place to tide over the situation.

In fact, the G-6 had proposed the name of BJP state president and Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Tendulkar as a probable replacement for Manohar Parrikar as Chief Minister in the event Parrikar steps down from the post on health grounds.
