Amid rising Covid cases in and around Mormugao taluka, the Disaster Management Cell under office of the South Goa Collector on Saturday has re-notified the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) Hospital at Sada as a Covid Care Centre.
According to an order issued by South Goa Collector Ruchika Katyal, who is also chairperson of the South Goa District Disaster Management Authority, the entire premise of MPT Hospital along with staff including doctors, nurses, support staff, MTS, etc. has been notified as the a Covid Care Centre from Saturday to house asymptomatic Covid positive patients.
"The department/Head of Office concerned shall handover the possession to the Dy Collector Mormugao on Saturday till further orders. Rohit Kadam, Dy Commissioner of Commercial Taxes, is appointed as nodal officer of the Covid Care Centre.”
“He will be assisted by the Mamlatdar of Mormugao. The Health officer of the Urban Health Centre, Vasco, will be overall incharge of the Covid Care Centre," said the order.
The MPT Hospital had been earlier notified as a Covid Care Centre when Covid cases began to rise in Vasco last year.
Initially, there was opposition to the requisitioning of the MPT Hospital as a Covid Care Centre, the hospital proved to be a major support system to the State administration in handling a surge in Covid cases in and around Vasco.
However, as Covid cases declined later in the year, the hospital was subsequently de-notified as a Covid Care Care, only to be re-notified following a sharp rise in Covid case during the second wave.
Meanwhile, there are 978 Covid active cases in Mormugao taluka and these cases have been recorded by the Vasco Urban Health Centre (398), Cortalim Primary Health Centre (382) and Cansaulim Primary Health Centre (198).
