Mindful to the growing anger over the Major Port Authorities (MPA) Bill, Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho has insisted that the powers to enable Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) to expand its jurisdiction till Betul was approved while the Congress was in power.
Activists have raised concerns that the MPA Bill would grant the port unfettered powers to undertake development within its port limits and port assets over a vast jurisdiction in the State, in supersession of state laws and master plans and without prior approval of State and local bodies.
"We have to understand and check who had given the power to MPT and when was it given. These powers were given to MPT much before BJP came into power. This approval was given by Congress and people must inquire about this.”
“It is not right to force things on BJP that was approved 20 years ago and it was the Congress government which approved the jurisdiction to MPT," said Godinho.
