Admitting there was an issue with the door-to-door garbage collection, Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Shubhanghi Vaigankar said the absence of workers involved in garbage collection and breakdown of vehicles were some of several reasons for the current garbage mess in town, but the council was trying to resolve the issue at the earliest.
Vaigankar also informed that the council would very soon outsource the door-to-door waste collection in the first five wards in Mapusa.
“One of the council’s biggest problems has been to organise labour for garbage collection. Several daily-wage workers fail to report to work putting pressure on the limited workforce involved in waste collection. We are trying our best to resolve the issue,” Vaigankar said.
She informed that the council was further handicapped as two vehicles with a hydraulic facility used in garbage collection had suffered a breakdown and were at the garage for repairs.
She also blamed people from neighbouring panchayats who dumped garbage in open spaces in Mapusa putting pressure on already stretched workforce.
“Several people from Bastora, Assagao, Siolim, Calangute and other neighbouring villages bring their waste in plastic bags and dump in our area. Our inspectors have issued fines to at least seven persons,” she said.
The chairperson further informed that the council has decided to experiment outsourcing of door-to-door waste collection in Wards 1-5.
