The Crime branch sleuths investigating the sensational Swapnil Walke murder case has almost veered to the conclusion that robbery was the prime motive behind the cold blooded killing of the young city-based jeweller.
The CB officials have also ruled out the possibility of contract killing.A senior CB official informed that the plan was to kill Swapnil and then decamp with the booty in the Bolero jeep parked outside the shop. Unfortunately for the assailants, the plan went awry after Swapnil resisted their move, as a result of which they had to make good their escape without the booty.
When questioned why the assailants preferred to kill Swapnil instead of threatening to kill if he did not hand over the jewellery, the official said they had hatched the plan to kill him inside the shop and flee with the booty. “Investigations have so far revealed that the assailants had planned to commit the robbery in a jewellery shop in Margao for some time. They, however, found that either the jewellery shops were guarded by security personnel or there was rush of customers at any given time or there were many staffers employed in the shops. The assailants zeroed in on the Krishni Jewellers as their recce showed that hardly any customers frequented this jewellery shop. They also found that the shop was manned by a lone person most of the time,” the officer added.
When pointed out that CCTV footage gives an impression that the assailants somehow wanted to kill Swapnil as the assailant pumped a bullet at the victim after entering the shop, the CB officer said investigations so far clearly shows that robbery was the main motive behind the incident. “There may be so many speculations, but we have to go as per the investigations. There were reports that one of the accused persons had stolen jewellery of his relative, but that has nothing to do with the instant case”, he added.
When asked to shed light on the 'supari' killing, more so after Edson Gonsalves made a startling disclosure to the media that the assailants had taken a “file” to kill Swapnil, the CB officer said “Edson got the information the wrong way. There was no contract with the assailants to kill Swapnil. Only the main accused was discussing as to who amongst them will take a file to pump the bullets on the victim”.
On the procurement of the country-made pistol used to commit the murder, the officer pointed out that investigations have so far revealed that the accused had returned back with the pistol by train around July.
