Losing out on making it to the final list of nominations for the Academy Awards may disappoint some, but not Bardroy Baretto. The Nachom-ia Kumpasar director is upbeat about the future, of the film and his too. In December, the news that the acclaimed Konkani film made it to the first reminder list for the Oscars nearly broke Facebook, with people posting about the achievement and that it was an honour for Konkani film and for Goa.
Even though it now didn’t make the cut, Bardroy is nonchalant. “The very fact that we reached there is an achievement I think,” he says. Of course, now that it made the reminder list, Baretto and the team have a hot product on their hands, with invitations for festivals flowing in from many corners. “Earlier, we would have to send in applications, but now we have a lot of invitations to send the film for festivals,” Baretto explains. Apart from that, even a year after its release, Nachom-ia Kumpasar is still playing to packed audiences and will soon be shown in the UAE.
One good piece of news that came out of the movie making it to the first reminder list, which is a list of movies that need to be watched and voted for by Academy members, is an invitation to send the film script to be included in the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences library. On January 5, Greg Walsh, the scripts librarian sent a mail asking for the screenplay and the Konkani shooting script to be sent to them, to be made available in the research library reading room. “I take joy in these things,” exclaims an excited Baretto.
So, somewhere down the line, an aspiring filmmaker might just sit down to read the script for Nachom-ia Kumpasar in a building on a boulevard in Beverly Hills. Mission accomplished, perhaps!
