Narrow escape for Quelossim locals

Inmates of some houses had a lucky escape, after a speeding truck loaded with gravel fell on its side at Quelossim in the wee hours of Monday.
The narrow road, next to Kesarval Motel connecting Quelossim to the main Verna highway near Sharayu Toyota showroom, is being used by heavy vehicles plying for the construction of flyover and one such speeding truck carrying gravel fell on its side, breaking the railings at a residential area on Monday.
It was a lucky escape for residents as the truck barely missed crashing on the houses below and got stuck to a tree along the slope on the roadside.
This incident has irked the villagers, who claim that over 100 heavy vehicles use the road everyday despite the signboard displaying ‘no entry' for heavy vehicles on both ends of the road. They also claim that several complaints have been made, but authorities have turned a deaf ear.
The villagers, who got together after the accident, have decided not to allow any crane to lift the truck till the safety railing and the road are repaired and till police take cognizance of such defaulting heavy vehicles.
Local Panch Rigel Tavares claimed that that despite signboards, these vehicles speed on this narrow road meant only for small cars and two-wheelers. "With houses on both sides of the road, we fear for our lives. The authorities must act before it is too late," he said.
A resident, T Fernandes added: "Every time we try to stop a heavy vehicle, they increase their speed and come charging at us. In fact, they increase the speed the moment they see villagers attempting to stop them." "If authorities don't act, we will come on roads and then start creating problems," warned Fernandes.
