In what could have been a small-scale catastrophe, a faulty ceiling fan fell on a female student at the Government Polytechnic in Altinho on Thursday afternoon.
Rutu Shirodkar was in her class along with classmates, when the incident occurred, and the ceiling fan fell and hit her on her shoulder, narrowly missing giving her a head or spinal injury, her uncle who is a doctor told The Goan. Rutu is in the second year of her diploma in architecture.
When her uncle, Dr Dhulapkar, who practices in Corlim, came to the institute to pick up his niece, he was appalled at the situation in the institute. “We met her teacher, who said that the fan had been faulty for a year. Despite repeated complaints, the fan was not fixed,” Dhulapkar said. “When I went to the institute, Rutu’s classmates were looking terrified, and staying far away from the ceiling fans,” he said.
Dhulapkar also expressed disappointment, alleging that the principal did not revert back to the family all afternoon. In addition to the ceiling fans, Dhulapkar said that in general, the infrastructure at the institute was not being maintained, posing a threat to students.
