Following up its promise to begin compensating flood-affected farmers before the Ganesh Chathurthi festival, the State government will make direct fund transfers into accounts of beneficiary farmers in Pernem, parts of Bardez and Bicholim.
On Friday, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, and Deputy Chief Ministers Manohar Ajgaonkar and Chandrakant Kavlekar will compensate farmers at the Pernem Society Hall at 12 pm.
In this first round of distribution of compensation, nearly Rs one-crore will be distributed to farmers mostly for the banana crops damaged by the fury of the monsoon.
Yet another similar event will be held at 1 pm at the Deendayal hall, Bicholim, where Sawant and Kavlekar will be present.
Meanwhile, assessment of the heavier losses suffered by the paddy cultivators is still not completed and officials of the Agriculture department are in the process of compiling the assessment reports. Farmers particularly in low-lying khazan fields have faced extensive damage to their standing crops due to the July-August flooding.
