The Government of India has commenced work on the development of eight new National Waterways, three of which are in Goa, the Rajya Sabha was informed on
Monday.
In his reply in the Rajya Sabha Mansukh L Mandaviya, Minister of State for Shipping informed that the National Waterways of Goa are “operational” and that “development works for expansion and setting up of floating jetties and upgradation and installation of navigational aids is underway.”
The three national waterways where work has begun include the Cumbarjua canal referred to as the ‘confluence of Zuari and Mandovi Rivers by Mandaviya, the River Mandovi right up to Usgao bridge and the Zuari river right up to Sanvordem bridge from Mormugao Port.
Despite opposition from several quarters, the Government of Goa bulldozed its way through with its decision to stick with the declaration of Goa’s rivers as National Waterways, albeit assuring the people of Goa that control of the rivers will remain with Goa through a tripartite memorandum of understanding between the Mormugao Port Trust, the Inland Waterways Authority of India and the Captain of Ports Department representing the Goa Government.
