The gram sabha of Navelim village panchayat on Sunday resolved to request the traffic authorities to restart the traffic signals at the Navelim Church junction for better traffic management.

The meeting, chaired by Sarpanch Paul Pereira, also decided to charge garbage collection fees from tenants living in rented rooms in the village.

After the meeting, the Sarpanch told the media that the panchayat has already begun identifying the number of tenants in the village to impose the garbage tax on them.

He said that wet waste is being dumped along the roadsides and warned that strict action would be taken against tenants found throwing waste in the open.

Regarding the traffic signals, Paul said several gram sabha members strongly demanded their revival at the Navelim Church junction. “The panchayat will soon write to the traffic authorities to explore the possibility of restarting the signals. Earlier, the signals did not fully solve the congestion issue, and we often saw long queues of vehicles on both sides. We will now seek the traffic department’s advice on how to address the matter,” he added.
