The Navelim gram sabha on Sunday has unanimously supported the demand to file a petition before the Commissioner, Linguistic Minorities Commission New Delhi to mete out justice for Konkani in Roman Script.
In fact, Navelim village gram saba has perhaps become the first gram sabha to support the demand for granting equal status for Konkani in Roman script in the Official language Act.
Members supported the resolution saying there’s been injustice on Konkani in Roman script over the years despite the fact that Roman Konkani is widely used by the religious and linguistic minorities to carry out the religious services.
The resolution has requested the Commissioner, Linguistic Minorities Commission to intervene and stop the injustice done to Roman script by successive government over the years. The members clarified they are not opposed to Devanagiri script, but are only demanding official status for Konkani in Roman script.
Members pointed out that people had all participated in the historic language agitation and the sacrifices made by Florian Vaz and the seven youth from Agasaim for the cause of Konkani in roman script.
Members were on their feet in unison as they supported the petition addressed to the Commissioner, Minority Linguistic Commission, exuding confidence that the Commission will mete out justice for Konkani in roman script.
Meanwhile, the meeting chaired by Sarpanch Lucia Carvalho deliberated on a host of issues, including absence of a bus shelter for commuters waiting for a bus from Navelim to Cuncolim/Chinchinim.
