In a significant development, the gram sabha of Navelim village panchayat on Sunday unanimously rejected the proposal made by Tata Power to take over distribution of power in the village.
At the gram sabha chaired by Sarpanch Paul Pereira, members rejected the Tata Power proposal, pointing out that any acceptance of the bid to privatise power distribution would result in potential loss of employment opportunities and high electricity costs.
Members of the gram sabha also raised the issue of mushrooming roadside vendors in the village. When the sarpanch pointed out that the panchayat had initiated action against the vendors, members demanded that the panchayat write to the district Collector to crack a whip against the illegal roadside vending.
Members also demanded to know the steps initiated by the panchayat on the High Court’s directions on CCTV cameras. The sarpanch replied back saying the panchayat would act as per the High Court’s directions after consulting the villagers.
The issue of garbage management also took the centre stage at the meeting. When members sought to know the panchayat plan to address the wet waste problem, the sarpanch disclosed that the Cacora waste management plant has agreed to take the wet waste generated in the village for a period of six months.
During discussions on the audit report presented at the meeting, members told the sarpanch to implement the findings and recommendations made in the audit.
