Navy Day celebrated  at Goa Naval Area

The Navy Day was celebrated at the Navy House at Headquarters, Goa Naval Area on Saturday.

Union Minister of State for Tourism and Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shripad Naik was the chief guest at the event, while Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho, Rear Admiral Philipose G Pynamootil, Flag Officer Commanding Goa Area, and three former chiefs of naval staff were among the large gathering of serving and retired naval officers and civilian dignitaries present at the function.

Speaking on the occasion, Rear Adm Pynamootil apprised the gathering of the developments over the past year. The admiral highlighted the services rendered to aid civil administration including restoration of normalcy post Cyclone Tauktae and the vaccination centre set up by Navy which administered over 55,000 doses.

An operational demo and flypast by naval aircraft, high speed run by Fast Interceptor Craft, SAR demo by Chetak helicopter and beating retreat ceremony were the highlights of the event. The event culminated with a grand sunset ceremony, screening of Navy Day telefilm and an impressive illumination of naval ships at anchorage.

The Navy Day is celebrated every December 4 to commemorate Operation Trident, a decisive mission during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

The swift and daring attack on Karachi harbour by missile boats of Indian took the enemy by surprise, and was one of the key factors that contributed to the victory of Indian Armed Forces.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the great victory, and is being celebrated as 'Swarnim Vijay Varsh' by the nation.
