Naval authorities on Wednesday afternoon stopped ongoing work at the area adjacent to the naval enclave in Dabolim.
According to sources, the Navy also deployed armed naval police to stop the work.
Sources said the incident took place as a truck was collecting stones from the area that has been excavated using labourers. As the work began, naval staff began instructing the labourers to stop the work immediately.
“Within no time, an armed Indian Navy police team immediately reached the spot and stopped the work, while warning the people at the site not to continue with any work in the area without prior permission and information.
Sources in the Navy informed that the action was initiated as the Navy officials had expressed concerns over the work near the naval compound.
Sources further informed that Flag Officer Commanding, Goa Naval Area, Rear Admiral Philipose George Pynumootil had earlier said the work was being stopped as it could pose danger to the aircraft landing at Dabolim Airport and had warned against any construction activities in the funnel zone. Chicalim Deputy sarpanch accuses Navy of harassment
VASCO: Chicalim Deputy Sarpanch Kamla Prasad Yadav informed reporters that he was not constructing anything in the area next to the naval compound at Dabolim, but was only plotting the land owned by him.
“The naval authorities have begun harassing me for no reason. I don’t understand why the Navy is suddenly showing great interest in the area. I am not constructing anything there and I do not understand why the navy is harassing me.”
“Nothing is illegal and I have permissions from all authorities and I am only plotting my own land. In case I plan for any construction on the land, I will apply for naval permission. They have stopped labourers from taking boulders from my own land and I don’t know why they have been doing it,” said Yadav.
