Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira on Saturday said that many people including the youth were being detected with lifestyle diseases like diabetes and even cancer and stressed the need to create awareness about these diseases among citizens.
“Youngsters are detected with diabetes while many suffer from cancer too. We need to change our food habits to live a healthy lifestyle,” Ferreira said.
The Aldona MLA was addressing a gathering after flagging off a walkathon by students of St Thomas Higher Secondary School, Aldona.
The walkathon ‘Educate to Protect Tomorrow’ was organised by Aldona Primary Health Centre to observe World Diabetes Day and National Cancer Awareness Day.
The Health Officer attached to the Aldona PHC Dr Roshan Nazareth along with his team as well as the teachers were present for the event.
Giving thumbs up to the special drive to raise awareness on diabetes and cancer, Ferreira said many times people were not aware of the disease and rush to the hospital when it is too late.
“People need to see such drives. Many times, we approach the doctor or hospital when the ailment is at an advanced stage. At times, the patient also dies. This is a very good move to organise the drive,” he said.
