The start of the academic year after a two-year gap on account of the Covid pandemic brought to the fore the traffic problems plaguing Valpoi town for almost a decade.
Vehicles were caught up in traffic jams as schoolchildren were being taken to and from schools in the area, while other motorists struggled to move within Valpoi town.
The Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) has made efforts to resolve the traffic issues in the municipality, but these measures have not been successful.
A number of attempts to notify a traffic management plan for Valpoi have also not been successful since the last seven years.
About two years ago, the VMC had made renewed efforts to set up a traffic plan and had even issued guidelines and installed notice boards at various places for this purpose. These efforts too were unsuccessful.
According to the traffic police, haphazard parking has been one of the main causes of traffic congestion and until a traffic plan is implemented, it would be difficult to ensure smooth traffic movement in Valpoi.
Residents have felt that the VMC, police and relevant authorities need to work together to resolve the traffic problems in Valpoi.
“A special drive needs to be conducted to enforce traffic discipline. Police teams need to be deployed in busy areas and those involved in haphazard parking need to be penalised. Only then will there be some traffic discipline in Valpoi town,” remarked a resident.
