Speaking on this, Aleixo F Da Costa, director, skill development and entrepreneurship, said, "I have recently told the principal of ITI at Pernem to speak to officials of GMR Infrastructure (which is going to build Mopa Airport) so that we know their skill-related requirements for the airport. Based on these discussions, we will start skill development programmes."
Da Costa further said, "We will start new courses in the ITIs at Pernem, Bicholim and Honda in July 2018 so that local people can be trained to work at Mopa Airport."
The first phase of Mopa Airport is likely to get commissioned in 2019. Therefore, the courses have to start in 2018 so that people can be trained to work at the airport.
Da Costa further informed, "The first batch of more than 100 technicians with FRP (fibre reinforced plastic) skills, who will work at Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) for its Rs 32,400 crore worth minesweeper order, will pass out in mid-2018."
Two years ago, GSL had got this massive minesweeper order from Union Defence Ministry. Such a huge order means that local workforce will have to be equipped with skills to work on strategic capabilities like minesweeper, which is crucial from country's defence viewpoint.
Creating workforce with FRP skills was a two-step process. The first step involved giving training to these 100 plus technicians under an ITI training scheme. Once that was done, they got a 2-year long apprenticeship on the shop-floor of GSL, which has made them ready with FRP skills to work on minesweeper order.
