The Goa police on Saturday swooped down on the weekend party crowd, tightening the screws on drunken driving yet again this weekend.
Some 425 tipsy motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol in a statewide effort conducted by the men-in-uniform on Friday-Saturday night, the third such operation undertaken by them in recent weeks.
Making maximum use of a new set of Alcometers, the cops up to September 29 this year have booked a total 4552 motorists for drunken driving.
In several cases, offenders were imposed a fine and even imprisonment. Till date about 127 such violators have been sentenced to imprisonment and in some cases their stay in jail extended up to 10 days. In addition to a fine, the cops also impound the vehicle when drivers are found drunk beyond the permissible levels.
In extreme cases where the driver is drunk beyond limit, with an excessive alcohol content of more than 200 mg per 100ml, the Police Inspectors personally go to the court along with the assistant public prosecutors and seek maximum punishment of imprisonment and suspension of the license of the violators by highlighting the gravity of the offense.
Traffic police have also clamped down offences such as using mobile phones while driving/riding, red light jumping, fancy number plate, driving while underage, dazzling light, cars with tinted glasses, driving without license, carrying excess pillion rider and without helmet.
Cops have warned that in future more such surprise drives will continue regularly.
