Barely a day after taking over charge, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Deepali Naik directed the MMC's recovery section to issue 200 notices giving defaulters 15 days to pay their outstanding dues, failing which their establishments would be sealed.
After taking over as full-time chief officer of MMC, Naik began the process to recover the outstanding taxes due to the MMC and informed The Goan that MMC has plans to penalise those found throwing garbage in open spaces.
“MMC has plans to fine those found throwing their garbage on the roadside and other areas. However, the quantum of fine has to be decided and accordingly, a resolution has to be passed,” informed Naik, while replying to a query on whether the council would impose fines on those throwing garbage along the roadside despite door-to-door collection of garbage in most wards.
“We also want to install CCTVs cameras at all such locations, where public creates a nuisance so that we can nab the culprits and penalise them. Since MMC is facing a financial crunch, it will take us sometime to install the CCTVs,” said Naik.
Naik further said there is lot of outstanding pending, due to which the financial position of the council has gone down, which has to be recovered on a war footing.
“I took over on Thursday and on Friday, directed the recovery and taxation sections to issue notices to the defaulters. On Friday itself, I signed 200 notices, giving the defaulters 15 days to pay their taxes, failing which their premises will be sealed,” said Naik.
“I have directed the personnel from the recovery and taxation sections to serve the notices to 200 defaulters on Sunday. However, the defaulters have refused to accept the notices saying that they do not accept the notices on Sunday,” added Naik.
“All the 200 notices are served to the business establishments on Monday and if they fail to pay the outstanding dues before the end of the 15th day, then their business establishments will be sealed on the 16th day,” warned Naik.
