According to electricity officials, the power cables from Rive to Surla will be laid through the mountainous area, a stretch of 7 kms.
Electricity officials have also prepared a special proposal to upgrade power system in the village and to provide 24/7 power supply.
According to sources, Surla village has become a prominent tourism destination due to its scenic beauty and cool climate even during summer season. Many nature lovers and tourists flock to Surla during rainy season, as it has become a perfect hill station in Goa to enjoy the natural beauty. The ‘Bazarancho Dhabdhabo' waterfall is another attraction in the area.
The existing cables laid about 12 years ago have developed faults at many places and there are many hurdles to rectify the faults as it passes through deep forest. The villagers have been complaining about frequent power failures and low voltage problem.
Poriem MLA Pratapsing Rane had directed the electricity department to replace underground cables with new ones having good sustainability.
Acting on Rane's direction, the department has proposed to lay underground cables at a cost of Rs 33 lakh and work will be tendered shortly, sources informed The Goan.
When contacted, Valpoi Electricity Assistant Engineer Ramdas Salelkar said the project of laying a new underground power cable line is in the process of being sanctioned by higher authorities.
Local Panch Suryakant Gaonkar had expressed happiness over the new proposal and said it would minimize power failures in the village. "The proposal should be sanctioned as early as possible," he said.
