In a bid to reduce traffic burden in the state, the government has asked the Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) to start a local train from Pernem to Canacona. KRC feels that the proposal is feasible and is currently working on synchronising its schedule with those currently plying on the routes.

The officials of South Western Railways, Konkan Railway Corporation on Monday held a meeting with Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza, Environment Minister Alina Saldanha and others officials.

“There will not be additional infrastructure created for this train. The only thing is matching its timing with those presently moving on these routes,” informed Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza, further adding that this train will help the local population travelling along this route and reduce the burden on traffic.

Presently, KRC is running a DMU train from on Margao-Karwar-Margao route from Monday to Saturday.

“Mostly, the same train will be extended to Pernem”, informed KR PROBaban Ghatge.

Verification of affected houses

PANAJI

The state government has decided to conduct a physical verification of houses that are likely to be affected with the doubling of South Western Railway line from Kulem to Vasco. This proposal of the Railway Ministry was opposed by Environment Minister Alina Salanha stating that there are ancestral houses along the existing single railway line which will be affected.

D’Souza informed that Environment Minister Alina Saldanha raised the issue that ancestral houses along this line will be adversely affected as some of these have already developed cracks.

“Now, the government has decided to do a physical verification along with the MLAs concerned”, he said.

He also informed that KRC has also agreed to fulfil its promises to construct over-bridges and minimise the number of manned/unmanned level crossings.
