Stating that the dream project of the Vasco fish market would be a reality soon, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Nandadeep Raut said a contractor has already been appointed to build a temporary structure to shift Vasco fish market vendors.
Raut, who celebrated his birthday on Thursday, said the MMC had also taken up the process to install two biodigesters to tackle the wet waste menace.
“I am glad the GSUDA, which will take up work on the new Vasco fish market, has already appointed a contractor. The contractor inspected the Vasco fish market recently and will now take up work on building a temporary structure to shift the Vasco fish market vendors.”
“The temporary structure will also be built as per the choice and comfort of the vendors. Work on the temporary shed can begin anytime
now, after which work on the fish market will begin,” said Raut.
Stating that the new Vasco fish market would be completed within a year, the MMC chairperson added that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had convened many meetings and had helped the MMC to take up this dream project.
“Once the new Vasco fish market is completed, we will have existing fish, vegetable and fruit vendors outside the market in one complex, making it easier for vendors and customers as well.”
“The MMC will also install two new biodigesters to tackle the issue of wet garbage. We will have two biodigesters with a capacity of 5 tonnes each, to handle around 10 tonnes of wet garbage across all 25 wards of MMC every day. We have placed a condition that the contractor has to maintain the biodigesters for 5 years,” said Raut.
He admitted that the earlier biodigesters installed were non-functional, causing garbage issues in the port town.
“As of now, bids for the tender to install the two new biodigesters is before the screening committee of GSUDA for technical clearance, after which we will open the financial bids,” he added.
