In a shocking incident, a newborn girl was found abandoned near the Sanquelim Primary Health Centre on Monday morning.

According to sources, the baby -- believed to be a day old -- was found wrapped in a plastic bag. Residents who had gone to throw garbage heard the cries of a baby and when they opened the plastic bag, they were shocked to find the baby in the bag.

The residents alerted the police and the baby was sent to the GMC hospital.

Bicholim police has filed an offence against unknown persons and is investigating the case.

This incident comes barely days after the body of a seven-month-old male foetus was found in a garbage bin at Valpoi on March 27.

The body had been wrapped in a red cloth and was placed in a garbage bin. The incident came to light only when municipal workers were segregating garbage collected from bins around the garden area. They were, however, unable to ascertain from which dustbin the dead body had been picked up.
