Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Monday re-launched the Newborn Baby Screening Programme at Goa Medical College on Monday
After the launch, Rane said that this initiative was last active in 2012 in Goa and we are bringing it back into action.
The current scheme will have every child mandatorily tested for metabolic disorders. “This is Goa government’s flagship programme. We plan to have this facility in every government-run hospital,” Rane said.
The screening aims at early detection of 50 inborn metabolic disorders in new-born babies. These will help in better management and cure of the disorders.
Speaking on the sidelines of the launch, Rane also
said that training for counselling will be given to staff
and if the central ministry gives its approval, a Mother and Child block will be stated in GMC.
He said, the government is also making efforts to start a regional cancer center.
Dean of Goa Medical College and Hospital, Dr. Pradeep Naik, Director of Directorate of Health Services Dr. Sanjeev Dalvi, CEO of Neaogen Labs, Bangalore Thomas Mookken were present on the occasion.
The programme was followed by the demonstration of the newborn screening test.
