The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday collected samples from a factory at the Pissurlem Industrial Estate, amid suspicions and concerns that chemicals have been discharged in the river and had polluted the Harvalem waterfall.
Confirming this, an official from the GSPCB said samples had been collected from the factory and were submitted to higher authorities, adding that the report would be available in about 10 days.
It may be recalled that panic over contaminated water gripped people in and around Sakhali after the famous Harvalem waterfall was suspected to have been polluted with the discharge of chemicals.
The sight of foam-like substance flowing from the Harvalem waterfall since the last three days had left many people suspecting that the chemicals had been discharged from factories located upstream in the Pissurlem Industrial Estate.
Speaker and Sankhlim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant had even visited the site on Sunday and inspected the waterfall along with a Goa State Pollution Control Board team (GSPCB).
The GSPCB team had collected water samples and sent them for analysis to ascertain if the water was contaminated and if so, the factory involved in discharging the contaminants.
