A group of residents from Vasco have written to the Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, requesting a new direct train on a daily basis between Vasco and Mumbai via the Konkan Railway route.

The group has requested the Railway ministry take up this request on a priority basis.

The group also submitted a copy of the letter to Ayush Minister Shripad Naik, MPs Narendra Savaikar and Vinay Tendulkar.

Speaking to the media, Shalaka Kambli said that various government and semi-government institutions like Airport Authority, Mormugao Port Trust, Indian Naval Base, BITS-Pilani college, Coast Guard, Customs, Goa Shipyard, Institute of Ship building, etc were based in Vasco.

“Vasco is a fast-growing commercial city. Many people from all over India arrive here in search of jobs . With a naval base in Vasco and another big naval base in Mumbai, several recruits and naval staff on transfer find it difficult to travel between Mumbai and Vasco and trains are the most effective and economical mode of transportation. Hence, this proposal should be considered,” said Kambli.

Another member Jayesh Shetgaonkar said that when tracks between Vasco and Miraj was meter gauge, two trains “ Mahalakshmi express and Koyna express “ were operational. These were later discontinued when the track was converted to broad gauge.”

The discontinuation of these trains have caused a lot of inconvenience to people.

At present, there are 7 interstate trains from Vasco leaving to Howrah, Vailankannni, Chennai, H Nizamuddin, Patna, Yeswantpur and Tirupati but no train to Mumbai. We have written a letter requesting for this direct train service and we hope our request is granted,” said Shetgaonkar
