MARGAO
Aquem witnessed an uproar on Monday evening over the issue of erection of a pandal on the roadside for sale of lotteries during the Ganeshotsav celebrations.
A huge crowd assembled at the Aquem junction in support of the erection of the pandal, even as objection was raised by one of the apartment owners stating that the pandal will only aggravate the traffic congestion in the area.
The organisers of the Ganeshotsav lottery contended that they had been erecting the pandal at the same site for the last many years without causing any obstruction to traffic or pedestrians.
They pointed out that they have been trying to put up the pandal at the traditional site since the last two days, but had to postpone the work because of the parking of a car on the land in question.
Monday saw a crowd of people assembled at the spot to demand the erection of the pandal at the traditional site. Margao police rushed to the site as the pandal erection work was objected to by two women staying in the building, who contended that erection of the pandal at the site will worsen the traffic situation at the Pandva chapel junction. “Once the pandal is erected, we will not be able to park or remove our vehicle,” the ladies maintained, adding that they had only requested the organisers to erect the pandal a few metres away from the spot.
